Create Your Home Spa Sanctuary

Create Your Home Spa Sanctuary Before the Session

Arriving at your mat already feeling calm makes a world of difference. Give yourself 10–15 minutes before the session begins to transform your space into a personal sanctuary.

FREE YOGA ONLINE IS BACK!

This started in lockdown as a way of connecting with others online through yoga. Once a week I would get together online and follow a guided session of strength building yoga, it carried on after lockdown eased but I went on a break when life got too much, I are now back and can’t to see who joins us!

I would like everyone to maximise the benefits of doing these sessions at home and if you have time to create a nice environment before you start, so I have put together a little guide of what I like to do:

Create Your Home Spa Sanctuary Before the Session

Candles

Candles are one of the quickest ways to shift the atmosphere of a room. Opt for natural soy or beeswax candles, which burn cleaner and longer than paraffin. Place them at different heights on the floor beside your mat, on a shelf, or on a low table to create a soft, layered glow.

For yoga and relaxation, scents like lavender, eucalyptus, sandalwood, or chamomile are particularly grounding. Light at least two or three to fill the space without overwhelming it. Always ensure they're safely positioned away from anything flammable before you begin moving.

Incense & Aromatherapy

Incense & Aromatherapy Scent has a powerful effect on the nervous system, helping to signal to your brain that it's time to slow down. Light your incense 10 minutes before the session starts so the scent settles gently into the room rather than arriving in a rush. Good choices for an evening yoga session include nag champa, frankincense, or jasmine, all known for their calming and grounding properties. If you prefer, an essential oil diffuser with a few drops of lavender or ylang ylang works just as well and is a good option if you're sensitive to smoke. Burn palo santo wood for a lighter, woodsy alternative that clears the air beautifully.

Mood Lighting Harsh overhead lighting is the enemy of relaxation. If you can, switch it off entirely and rely on your candles, or use a salt lamp for a warm amber glow that's deeply soothing. Fairy lights draped along a wall or windowsill add a soft, ambient quality without being overly bright. If you use smart bulbs, set them to a warm white or amber tone at around 10–20% brightness. The goal is a room that feels cocooned and intimate, somewhere that signals rest rather than activity.

Sound Though not a visual element, sound completes the spa experience. Play a gentle ambient playlist or nature sounds (rainfall, ocean waves, singing bowls) at low volume in the background before the session begins, then mute it when you join the Zoom. Apps like Insight Timer or Spotify have excellent free meditation and spa music playlists. Please also mute yourself once the session starts

Setting the Space Clear your yoga area of clutter — even just tidying the immediate space around your mat makes a difference to how settled you feel. Lay out a folded blanket and a cushion nearby for any seated or restorative moments. Have a glass of water or a warm herbal tea (peppermint, ginger, or chamomile work well) within reach. If you have a plant or two, bring them into the room — greenery has a genuinely calming effect and adds to the sense of a natural, peaceful retreat.

-Please note that these sessions use a verified guided yoga app as the foundation of each class. I join every session to offer personal encouragement and support with positioning, but I want to be transparent — I am not a qualified yoga instructor. These sessions exist to make self-care a little more accessible and consistent, and to give us a shared space to show up for ourselves each week. Please listen to your body, work at your own pace, and consult a medical professional if you have any health concerns before joining.
